STATE COUNCIL OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

The development of science and technology is vital in order for the world to sustain increasing populations and their activities. Science and technology hold answers to questions of how to make human actions more efficient, friendlier to the environment, and more conductive to quality of life. These are powerful tools for the prosperity of the state. We can’t imagine of a good life without the support of modern technologies. To promote development and application of science & technology in the state, the State Council of Science and Technology for Sikkim was established and registered as an autonomous body under the Government of Sikkim in August 1996 with the following objectives.

  • To increase the science & technology infrastructure for meeting the   challenging demands in basic research, technology development, and scientific services.

  • To identify the areas where science and technology intervention could significantly improve the existing socio-economic conditions.

  • To identify areas of long-term development of the state by ensuring application of science and technology developed so far.

  • Pilot scale demonstration projects.

  • Replication of success models and undertaking pilot scale demonstration projects.

  • Develop appropriate mechanisms for reducing the time lag between an invention and its commercialization.

  • To supplement the efforts of the state government in implementing various projects whenever called for.

  • To popularize technologies and initiate scientific attitude and temperament amongst the people of the state through awareness and training programs.

  • To facilitate the scientists and the entrepreneurs in promoting technology transfers, establishing a strong relationship among the academia, research institutes and industry, guidance for developing entrepreneurship.

The State Council of Science & Technology for Sikkim with the Chief Minister of Sikkim as Chairman and the Minister for Department of Science & Technology, Government of Sikkim as Vice-Chairman has a representation of members drawn from different fields. The Secretary, Department of Science & Technology, Government of Sikkim is Member Secretary to the State Council and other members are mostly senior level government functionaries, scientists or academicians. The State Council also has an Executive Committee headed by the Member Secretary.
